Texas A&M Gunman

This year alone is turning out to be a deadly year as far as shootings go as there has been yet again another reported shooting this time taking place at Texas A&M University. On August 13, 2012 police near Texas A&M University received a call around noon from a college station citizen indicated that there had been shots fired south of the University in a small residential area.

“After the fourth or fifth shot, I stuck my head out the door and could hear actual gunfire, so I took cover and observed that there was an officer down.” Neighbor Rigo Cisneros said on the phone to police.

The officer down was 41 year old Brian Bachmann he was on duty and in the process of serving 35 year old Thomas Caffall an eviction notice before Caffall opened fire with an assault rifle on the officer. This was around 12:30 the same time in which the University sent out urgent E-mails and text to students and residents to stay inside and avoid that residential area where the shots were being fired.

Two nearby officers received the distressed alert and responded to the residential area where they saw one of their own down and not responding on the gun man front yard. The officers were taking heavy heat from the gun man and took cover to defend themselves while also calling for backup according to CNN. It was very unfortunate that one local resident were at the wrong place at the wrong time as 43-year-old man Chris Northcliff was shot and killed by the gun man, he also shot at a 55 year old women wounding her in the process, she is currently labeled in serious condition according to The New York Times.

When several policeman responded to the scene the gun man continued to open fire for 30 minutes hitting and wounding three officers before being shot by law enforcement, he would later die while in custody but before the police took him in he asked for forgiveness for shooting and killing an officer. Caffall mother Linda Weaver responded to the situation saying that her son was “ill” and that her and her family was shocked and devastated by the tragedy.

“Our thoughts and prayers go to the families of the deceased and the wounded victims, we mourn them and the loss of my son he had been ill. It breaks our hearts his illness led to this.” Weaver said

College station mayor Nancy Berry issued a statement Monday afternoon regarding this shooting.

“What unfolded today in College Station is beyond tragic, there are many victims including the families of Mr. Caffall and Mr. Northcliff, who will continue to suffer physical and emotional pain for a very long time, and we shouldn’t forget them.” Berry said in a statement to the media

This is the third major shooting in just over a month here in the United States, why do you think it appears that shootings are happening more often now?
