A lawmaker in Maine who voted on gun control says someone fired a paintball at his home in an attempt to intimidate him.
On Tuesday, Sen. David Dutremble broke a 6-6 tie in support of the bill to put a limit on gun magazines to 10 rounds. The vote by the Criminal Justice and Public Safety Committee sent the bill to the full Legislature with a recommendation to pass it.
The following evening at 8:55 p.m, police received a call that someone had shot a paintball at the window of Dutremble’s home on 536 Elm St.
Deputy Chief Joanne Fisk said while the paintball burst onto the window, it did not break it. Fisk added that the incident is still under investigation.
Dutremble released a statement on Friday about the incident, “This action crossed the line, As lawmakers, we make tough decisions, and we hold ourselves accountable and stand by the decisions that we make. But nobody should be subjected to threats or acts of violence. What’s most important is the safety and well-being of our families. We can disagree, but we need to disagree respectfully, without crossing the line to threats and violence.”
The Criminal Justice Committee has added additional personnel at the door and in hallways at the State House during meetings.
Dutremble, 45-years old, is a freshman lawmaker representing Arundel, Kennebunk, Kennebunkport and part of Biddeford reports the Online Sentinel. He works as an electrician and as lieutenant firefighter with the Biddeford Fire Department. His family has a history of political and community service in Biddeford and in Maine. His father was the York County Sheriff for 17 years, his uncle served in the House, and his cousin served in both chambers of the Legislature and as Senate President.
He and his wife Charlene have five children.
