Visine Prank

As the saying goes, don’t leave your drink unattended because someone may put something it. You would never expect your friend of any sort to do this to you, but in recent news, a boyfriend put Visine eye drops in his girlfriend’s drink.

Shayne Carpenter, 27 years old was arrested after he allegedly put Visine eye drops in his girlfriend’s drink during a fight.

Officials told KXTV Carpenter’s girlfriend became suspicious after finding texts on her boyfriend’s phone to his friends about the Visine poison prank.

“She found some texts on her boyfriend’s phone that indicated he had put Visine in her drink,” said Lt. Steve Tripp of the Nevada County Sheriff Department. “He was making texts to his buddies that if ‘She’s going to be talking crap then she’s going to be crapping.”

Police say Carpenter’s girlfriend hadn’t been feeling well, and after seeing the texts, she contacted police.

As part of the investigation, officers told the girl talk to Carpenter over the phone and he admitted to the “prank.”

“We got admissions from him over the phone, when he was admitting to her, that he had done this,” Tripp said.

Shayne Carpenter was then arrested by the Nevada County Sheriff’s Office on Thursday in Grass Valley, California and booked on poisoning and domestic violence charges.

According to officials, Carpenter’s girlfriend, whose name was not released, was treated in the hospital and released.

Carpenter was released from jail Friday after posting a $25,000 bail.

Visine contains a dangerous chemical known as Tetrahydrozoline and according to their website, it contains as much as .05%. The chemical is described as a “redness reliever.” Tetrahydrozoline can also be found in several other over-the-counter eye drops and nasal sprays.

Pfizer, the company that manufactures Visine, even has a caution to users on the product: “If swallowed, get medical help or contact a Poison Control Center right away.”

While this chemical will not produce diarrhea like Shayne Carpenter was hoping, it does have extreme adverse side effects if taken orally. It can induce side effects that include low body temperature, blurred vision, nausea and vomiting, difficulty breathing, seizures and possible coma.
