Octomom Nadya Suleman is under an investigation for welfare fraud after a complaint was received from her local Department of Welfare Fraud Prevention and Investigation.
TMZ reported that someone made the allegation last week to the L.A. County Dept. of Welfare Fraud Prevention and Investigation (WFP&I), claiming Octomom is receiving welfare, including food stamps. Even though the mother of 14 made nearly $200,000 in 2012.
Under California law, Octomom can legitimately collect welfare for her and her 14 kids if she makes $119,000 or less in a calendar year, but if the allegation is true, she exceeded the limit.
Octomom’s earnings came from such jobs from starring role in a adult film, stripping and other publicity stunts.
“I’d be lying if I didn’t say generating revenue wasn’t a major reason why I did it, but I found the experience was empowering and liberating,” Suleman told the Huffington Post last June when the video was debuted.
If Octomom is convicted of welfare fraud, she risks going to jail for up to three years.
A source close to Nadya Suleman told E! News that officials with the L.A. County Department of Welfare Fraud Prevention and Investigation are probing whether the mother of 14 may have committed welfare fraud. “I can confirm that the authorities have been in contact with us concerning her income and we have been cooperating,” said the source.
This isn’t the first for Octomom problems. In May 2012, Octomom filed for Backruptcy to escape from debt she accumulated from having so many kids and other expenses.
She told Oprah Winfrey in a recent interview about the decision to make the adult film, “Years after I had the babies – the octuplets – my manager and I collaborated together on doing an independent, um, self-pleasure video. I did it obviously to provide for my family. But doing it, I don’t regret it. I actually, shockingly enough, it became one of the most liberating and empowering things I had ever done.”
She also revealed to Oprah that she was diagnosed with post traumatic stress disorder last year, for which she had to undergo treatment.
